Does colonoscopy treat bowel polyps?

A colonoscopy allows the clinician to inspect the bowel lining and use instruments passed through the scope to remove accessible polyps. The removed tissue goes to a laboratory, where its type, size, and cellular features are assessed. A small polyp may be snared or lifted and removed during the examination. A broad-based, very large, or awkwardly positioned polyp may be left for removal by an advanced endoscopist or surgeon, because attempting removal requires careful planning. Removal does not mean every future polyp is prevented; the bowel can form new polyps, so follow-up is based on the findings.

Ask whether the polyp was removed completely, when the laboratory report is expected, and when your next bowel examination should occur. Keep the report available for future clinicians, especially if several polyps were found or a close relative has bowel disease. Following polyp removal, get urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fever, fainting, repeated vomiting, or a rapidly swollen abdomen.
