Does chronic sinusitis cause a blocked nose?

Chronic sinusitis involves ongoing inflammation in the sinus and nasal lining. Swelling and thicker mucus can reduce airflow and make the nose feel stuffy, sometimes on one side and sometimes on both. Reduced drainage may also cause a dull sense of pressure, a reduced sense of smell, or mucus at the back of the throat. A blocked nose alone has several possible explanations, so it does not identify one condition by itself.

A clinician can assess how long the blockage has lasted, whether it changes sides, and whether there is facial discomfort, discharge or reduced smell. Saline rinsing may help clear mucus when used safely with suitable water and clean equipment. A clinician may also discuss a nasal spray or another treatment based on the cause. Avoid using decongestant nasal sprays for longer than the product instructions allow, as overuse can worsen congestion.

Arrange medical assessment if blockage persists, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, or affects smell. Seek urgent help for swelling around an eye, vision changes, severe headache with fever, confusion, or marked facial swelling. These symptoms need prompt evaluation rather than home treatment alone.
