Does bunion surgery help with toe pain?

A bunion changes the alignment around the big toe joint. Pressure from shoes, rubbing over the prominence, and stress across the joint can cause pain. Surgery corrects selected parts of that alignment and may reduce pressure and improve the way the joint bears load. It is not a treatment for every type of toe pain, such as pain from an ingrown nail, gout, nerve irritation, or a different joint problem.

The operation and recovery plan depend on the deformity, joint condition, activity needs, and overall health. Swelling and soreness are expected during healing, and the toe may need protection while bone and soft tissues recover. Improvement is assessed over follow-up rather than immediately after surgery.

Arrange a foot and ankle assessment if pain is persistent, footwear is difficult to wear, or the toe is changing position. The clinician may assess walking, joint movement, skin pressure, and imaging. Before deciding, discuss shoe changes, padding, activity adjustments, physiotherapy, and pain relief, as well as whether surgery addresses the actual pain source.

If surgery is chosen, ask about weight-bearing, wound care, driving, work, and exercises. Follow the advised protection plan and do not force the toe through painful movement during recovery.

Seek prompt care for a red, hot, rapidly swollen joint, fever, spreading redness, an open or draining wound, severe pain after an injury, or a toe that becomes pale, blue, cold, numb, or difficult to move.
