Does brain tumour cause persistent headache?

A tumour may contribute to headache by affecting pressure or nearby pain-sensitive tissues. Headache is also associated with many conditions unrelated to a tumour, making the wider symptom pattern important.

A clinician will want to know when the headache began, whether it is getting more frequent or intense, where it is felt, and whether coughing, bending, activity, or sleep changes it. A different pattern from your familiar headaches is particularly useful to mention.

Associated vomiting, seizures, personality or memory changes, poor balance, limb weakness, speech difficulty, or altered vision can point to effects on brain function and influence how quickly tests are arranged.

Book a medical review for a new headache that persists, progressively changes, or disrupts normal activity. Bring a list of medicines and a brief diary covering timing, severity, triggers, relief measures, and neurological symptoms.

Use pain medicine only as directed, because frequent unsupervised use can complicate the headache pattern. Examination may include strength, coordination, sensation, vision, and reflexes; imaging is considered from the overall findings.

Call emergency services for a headache that becomes suddenly severe or occurs with a first seizure, collapse, reduced consciousness, new weakness, trouble speaking, or sudden loss of vision. Repeated vomiting with increasing drowsiness also needs immediate care.

Do not drive yourself when neurological symptoms are present. If symptoms worsen while awaiting advice, use emergency care rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Consider asking which features of your headache are concerning, what the neurological examination found, and whether brain imaging is needed now or after further observation.

If a tumour is found, ask whether swelling is contributing, how the headache will be managed, what treatment choices apply, and which changes require direct contact with the clinical team.
