Does a bone density scan treat osteoporosis?

A bone density scan is an imaging test that estimates how much mineral is packed into selected bones, often at the hip and lower spine. It is quick and does not strengthen bone during the scan. The result helps a clinician combine bone density with age, previous fractures, medicines and other health factors when deciding whether treatment or monitoring is appropriate.

Osteoporosis care may include prescribed bone-strengthening medicine, nutrition advice, resistance exercise and fall prevention. Discuss the result with the clinician who requested it rather than interpreting a score alone. Ask what it means for your fracture risk, whether you need treatment, and when follow-up is useful. Share any history of fractures, long-term steroid use, thyroid or kidney conditions, and medicines or supplements. Begin strengthening or balance exercises with suitable guidance if pain, frailty or a prior fracture affects movement.

Seek prompt medical assessment after a fall that causes persistent back, hip or wrist pain, difficulty standing, or a change in posture. Obtain urgent help for severe sudden back pain with leg weakness, numbness, or bladder or bowel changes. These symptoms need examination for a fracture or nerve involvement; repeating a scan is not a substitute for urgent care.
