Does benign paroxysmal positional vertigo cause dizziness?

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, often called BPPV, develops when tiny calcium particles move into a part of the inner ear that senses rotation. Turning in bed, looking up, bending down, or sitting up can then send confusing signals to the brain. Episodes are often brief, but nausea or unsteadiness may linger after the spinning settles. Other causes of dizziness can affect balance, blood pressure, vision, or the nervous system.

Book an assessment if dizziness is repeated, affects walking, or makes daily activities unsafe. A clinician can ask about the exact head movement that triggers symptoms and may perform positional testing. Treatment may involve a guided repositioning manoeuvre suited to the affected ear. Move carefully while dizzy, sit down before turning, and avoid driving or climbing until you can do so safely.

Seek emergency help for dizziness with new weakness, facial drooping, slurred speech, severe headache, chest pain, fainting, double vision, inability to walk, or ongoing vomiting. These symptoms are not typical features to manage as simple positional vertigo and require urgent assessment.
