Does aplastic anaemia cause easy bruising?

Aplastic anaemia affects the bone marrow, where blood cells are made. When platelet production falls, the blood may not form a plug as readily after small knocks or pressure. This can lead to bruises, tiny red or purple spots, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or heavier-than-usual menstrual bleeding. Other blood-cell shortages may cause tiredness, pale skin, breathlessness, or repeated infections. Easy bruising has many possible causes, so it needs assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Arrange a medical assessment if bruises are new, spreading, frequent, or appearing without a clear injury. A clinician may ask about bleeding, infections, fatigue, medicines, and family history, then arrange blood tests to check blood-cell counts. Protect your skin from knocks, use a soft toothbrush, and avoid starting aspirin or anti-inflammatory medicines unless a clinician has advised them. Do not stop prescribed medicines without guidance.

Seek urgent care for bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure, blood in vomit or stools, a severe headache, confusion, new weakness, or a head injury. Fever with feeling very unwell also needs prompt attention because low white blood cells can affect infection defence. Heavy bleeding, marked dizziness, or breathlessness should not wait for a routine appointment.
