Does anti-inflammatory medication help with joint swelling?

Inflammation can make a joint warm, tender, stiff, and visibly swollen. Anti-inflammatory medicine can dampen that process, which may improve comfort and movement. Swelling after an impact, a torn structure, infection, crystal arthritis, or another medical condition may require additional treatment, so a change in swelling does not explain its cause.

A clinician may ask whether one or several joints are affected, how quickly the swelling appeared, whether the skin is hot or red, and whether fever or illness is present. Do not assume that every swollen joint is appropriate for self-treatment.

Protect the joint from activities that clearly worsen symptoms, but avoid prolonged complete rest unless advised. Elevation and a wrapped cold pack may provide comfort for a recent flare or injury. Before taking medicine, check with a pharmacist or doctor if you have kidney, stomach, heart, or blood-pressure problems, take blood thinners, or are pregnant. Use only the recommended product and directions.

A rapidly swollen, hot, red, or very painful joint needs prompt assessment, particularly with fever or feeling unwell, because infection can damage a joint. Seek urgent help after a major injury if the joint looks deformed, cannot bear weight, or becomes numb. Arrange routine review when swelling persists or keeps returning.
