Does anovulation cause irregular periods?

Anovulation means an ovary does not release an egg during a cycle. Ovulation normally helps coordinate the rise and fall of hormones that prepare the uterine lining and bring on a period. Arrange medical advice if periods repeatedly disappear, bleeding continues for an unusually long time, or irregular cycles are affecting plans for pregnancy. Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding with weakness or dizziness, severe pelvic pain, fainting, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy.
