Does anaemia cause easy bruising?

A bruise forms when small blood vessels leak under the skin. Anaemia describes reduced healthy red blood cells or haemoglobin, but different underlying causes can affect the body in different ways. Bruising may accompany a blood or platelet problem, a clotting disorder, nutritional deficiency, medicine effect, or repeated minor injury. The colour, size, number, and location of bruises can help a clinician judge the pattern.

Tell your clinician whether bruises appeared without a clear knock, whether they are spreading, and whether you also have nosebleeds, bleeding gums, heavy periods, blood in urine, or dark stools. A blood count and clotting assessment may be considered. Easy bruising is not proof of anaemia, and anaemia does not explain every bruise.

Photograph a new or enlarging bruise beside a familiar object for scale, and keep a brief record of when it appeared. Bring a list of prescribed medicines, over-the-counter pain relievers, supplements, and herbal products; some can increase bleeding or bruising. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice.

Arrange an appointment for frequent, unexplained, painful, or unusually large bruises. A clinician may examine your skin and request blood tests to look at blood cells, iron status, or clotting, depending on your history.

Get urgent help if bruising comes with bleeding that will not stop, vomiting blood, black stools, blood in urine, severe headache, confusion, marked weakness, or fainting. Seek prompt care for rapidly appearing widespread bruises, a very swollen painful area, or fever with unusual bleeding. A bruise after a significant injury also deserves timely assessment.

Ask whether your bruising pattern suggests a platelet or clotting issue, which tests are appropriate, and whether any medicine or supplement could contribute. Ask how to protect the skin, what bleeding signs to watch for, and when results should be reviewed.
