Does allergic rhinitis cause cough?

When the lining of the nose reacts to pollen, dust, mould or another trigger, it can swell and produce extra mucus. Mucus may move backwards into the throat, creating a tickle that prompts repeated throat-clearing or coughing. Mouth breathing can also dry and irritate the throat. A cough related to rhinitis may occur alongside sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, itchy eyes or a feeling of drainage at the back of the throat. Allergic rhinitis does not explain every cough, so the pattern and other symptoms still matter.

Notice whether the cough follows exposure to a particular trigger and whether it improves when you leave that setting. Reducing dust in the bedroom, keeping windows closed during high-pollen periods and washing after outdoor exposure may help. Drink fluids and avoid smoke, strong fragrances and other airway irritants. Arrange medical advice if the cough keeps returning, disrupts sleep, lasts beyond the expected allergy flare or occurs without nasal symptoms. Seek urgent help for difficult breathing, chest pain, blue or grey lips, coughing blood or a rapidly worsening reaction with swelling of the lips or tongue. These signs need assessment rather than being attributed to allergic rhinitis.
