Does radiology perform MRI scans?

MRI uses a strong magnet and radio waves to create detailed images. The radiographer completes safety checks, helps position you and communicates with you from the control area. The radiologist examines the image series and sends a report to the clinician who ordered the scan.

The examination can include several sequences, each producing a different type of image. You will hear loud tapping or knocking sounds, receive hearing protection and need to keep still while each sequence runs.

Tell the team in advance about a pacemaker, implanted device, metal fragment, previous surgery, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, kidney problems, allergies and difficulty in enclosed spaces. The department must confirm whether implanted devices and metal are compatible with the MRI environment.

Follow instructions on food, medicines and clothing. Leave removable metal objects outside the scan room. If you feel anxious or uncomfortable inside the scanner, use the call device; the radiographer can hear you and can explain what happens next.

Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or a quickly spreading rash after an injected contrast agent. For ongoing pain or swelling at the injection site, persistent vomiting, or a new symptom after the appointment, contact the radiology department or the clinician managing your care.

Confirm what the MRI is intended to clarify, whether contrast will be used and whether an implant requires documentation. If enclosed spaces worry you, ask what support the department can offer before the day of the scan. Also clarify when and from whom you should expect the result.
