Mohs surgery removes visible tumour tissue in thin layers. Each layer is examined while the patient is at the clinic, and further tissue is removed only where tumour cells remain at the edge. This tissue-sparing approach can be useful for cancers on areas where preserving healthy skin matters, such as the face, ears, fingers or around the eyes. The surgeon then plans wound closure or reconstruction based on the final defect.

Bring your biopsy details, medication list and information about allergies or bleeding problems. Wear comfortable clothing and plan for a clinic visit whose length depends on how many layers need examination. Avoid applying products over the surgical site unless instructed. Arrange practical support for the journey home if reconstruction or a sensitive location may make driving uncomfortable.

Follow the wound instructions and contact the surgical team if bleeding continues despite firm pressure, or if redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever or pain is increasing. Sudden facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a rapidly worsening wound needs urgent care. A new change at or near the treated site should also be examined rather than covered with cosmetic products.
