Does a dermatologic surgery perform cyst removal?

A cyst is a sac beneath or within the skin that may contain fluid, keratin or other material. A dermatologist first examines the lump and the surrounding skin to decide whether it is appropriate to remove. Removal commonly involves numbing the area, making a small opening, taking out the cyst and closing or dressing the site. If the cyst is inflamed or infected, the timing and method may differ; draining an irritated cyst does not always remove its surrounding wall, so it can return.

Do not squeeze, pierce or repeatedly press the lump, because this can worsen irritation and make treatment harder. Tell the clinician about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies and any previous reaction to local anaesthetic. After removal, follow the wound-care instructions, keep the dressing as advised and avoid rubbing the area. The clinician may arrange a review to check healing and may explain whether removed tissue needs laboratory assessment.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if the lump becomes rapidly more swollen, hot, increasingly painful or surrounded by spreading redness. Fever, pus, red streaking or feeling markedly unwell can signal infection and need timely attention. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, or for swelling that affects breathing or swallowing.
