Do you need IUI after a tubal dye test?

A tubal dye test uses imaging and contrast to assess the shape of the womb and whether dye passes through the fallopian tubes. Open tubes do not by themselves show that IUI is needed, while a blockage may change the options because sperm still need access to an egg.

IUI places prepared sperm inside the womb around ovulation. It may be considered for unexplained fertility difficulties, ovulation problems or selected sperm concerns when at least one tube is open. Other findings may point towards treating ovulation, surgery or IVF instead.

Ask your fertility clinician to explain whether one or both tubes were open and whether the result was limited by spasm or image quality. Review ovulation, ovarian reserve, semen findings and the length of time trying to conceive. Then compare timed intercourse, IUI and IVF, including the reasons for each recommendation.

Contact your clinic for fever, worsening pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, faintness or foul-smelling discharge after the test. Urgent assessment is appropriate for severe pain, collapse or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
