Do you need colposcopy after an HPV test?

HPV is a common virus, and a positive result does not diagnose cancer. Follow-up is based on the HPV type or risk category, whether cervical cells look changed, and your earlier screening history.

Colposcopy lets a clinician inspect the cervix under magnification and sometimes collect a small biopsy. Other results may call for repeat HPV testing or another screening check instead.

Use the result letter or clinic message to identify the recommended appointment and timeframe. Tell the clinic if you are pregnant, recently gave birth, have unusual bleeding, or take medicines that affect clotting. Keep your follow-up even if you feel well, because HPV and cervical cell changes often cause no symptoms.

Arrange medical review for bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, persistent unusual discharge or pelvic pain. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fainting or fever.

Ask whether the result needs colposcopy or repeat testing, whether cervical cells were assessed, what the appointment involves, and how pregnancy or previous results change the plan.
