Do you need a referral for colonoscopy?

A referral helps the endoscopy team understand whether the test is for symptoms, follow-up, screening, or surveillance. A specialist still checks whether colonoscopy is suitable and what preparation or sedation arrangements apply.

The clinical request usually states why the colon needs examination and includes relevant history. This allows the service to assess priority, review medicines and health conditions, and decide whether another investigation should come first.

During colonoscopy, a flexible camera examines the lining of the large bowel. The clinician may take tissue samples or remove certain polyps if appropriate. The referral itself neither confirms cancer nor guarantees that a procedure will be performed on the first visit.

Ask the endoscopy unit whether you can book directly, need a primary-care or specialist referral, or must first attend a consultation. Tell them the reason for the test and whether you already have a clinical request.

Share previous colonoscopy and pathology reports, a complete medicine list, allergies, and major health conditions. Mention blood thinners, diabetes treatment, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, implanted devices, and past problems with sedation so the team can give tailored preparation instructions.

Follow the bowel-preparation directions provided by the service. Do not improvise changes to prescribed medicines; confirm any adjustments with the responsible clinician.

Seek prompt medical assessment for ongoing rectal bleeding, a persistent change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss, or abdominal pain that continues or worsens. These symptoms have several possible causes, and clinical review determines the appropriate investigation.

Go to urgent care for heavy bleeding, black tar-like stool with weakness, fainting, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a very swollen abdomen, or inability to pass stool or gas. Emergency assessment addresses immediate risk; colonoscopy may not be the first test in an acute situation.

Ask why colonoscopy is recommended, what alternatives might answer the same question, how to prepare, which medicines require a plan, whether sedation is expected, how results will be communicated, and whether someone must accompany you home.
