Do you need a referral for bone density scan?

A general-practice clinician can review factors such as a previous fragility fracture, family history, menopause, long-term steroid treatment, low body weight, smoking, alcohol use, and conditions that affect bone health. The scan measures bone mineral density, usually at the hip and spine, but the number alone does not describe your complete fracture risk.

Some people may need specialist advice from radiology, endocrinology, rheumatology, or another service, especially when the result is difficult to interpret, a medicine affects bone health, or a fracture has occurred. The requesting clinician can select the appropriate test and explain what happens afterward.

Start with your primary-care clinician or the service managing your bone health. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, previous fractures, and relevant diagnoses. Tell the imaging service if there is any chance you are pregnant, if you recently had another imaging test involving contrast, or if you cannot lie flat comfortably.

Follow the appointment instructions and ask when the report will be reviewed. Do not start calcium, vitamin supplements, or bone medicine solely because you are arranging a scan; discuss what is suitable for you first.

Seek prompt medical assessment after a significant fall or injury with severe pain, inability to bear weight, a visibly changed limb, or new loss of movement. A scan appointment should not delay urgent treatment for a suspected fracture.

Ask why the scan is recommended, which body areas will be assessed, how the result will affect your care, whether another test is needed, and when you will discuss the report.
