Pancolonic diverticulosis explained

Pancolonic means the pouches are seen in multiple parts of the large bowel rather than being limited to one segment. Diverticulosis describes the structural finding. It is not the same as diverticulitis, where inflammation or infection causes an acute illness.

People can have no bowel symptoms, or may report bloating, constipation or discomfort. Because pouches are spread across the colon, the location of pain alone cannot identify the cause. Read about [Diverticular Disease](/conditions/diverticular-disease/).

Discuss a gradual fibre increase with your clinician, using foods such as fruit, vegetables, beans and whole grains, and keep fluids regular. Gentle activity may help bowel movement patterns. Record stool frequency, pain and any blood so your clinician can interpret changes.

Do not force fibre during vomiting or marked abdominal swelling, and check before taking laxatives or regular pain medicines. Seek urgent care for severe or escalating abdominal pain, fever, persistent vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, or rectal bleeding with dizziness, weakness or faintness.
