What should you know about diverticulitis in transverse colon?

The transverse colon is the section of the large intestine that runs across the upper abdomen between the right and left sides. Diverticulitis means inflammation of a pouch in the bowel wall; symptoms can be felt near the inflamed area but are not reliably mapped by location alone. Pain may be central or upper abdominal, with fever, nausea or altered bowel movements in some cases.

Other conditions can cause similar pain, including problems affecting the stomach, gallbladder or pancreas. Read about Diverticular Disease, but use a clinical assessment to work out what is happening.

Contact a GP Consultation service for persistent or recurring pain, fever, vomiting or a significant change in bowel movements. Describe whether pain moves, how it relates to meals or bowel movements, and whether you have had abdominal surgery or previous diverticular symptoms. The clinician may choose an examination and tests based on your history.

Seek urgent help for severe or worsening pain, a swollen or rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, blood in the stool, or inability to pass stool or gas. Fever with increasing pain also warrants prompt care. These warning signs can occur with complications or with other urgent abdominal conditions.

Ask whether the pain pattern fits bowel inflammation, whether imaging or other tests are needed, what you may eat and drink while symptoms settle, and which signs mean you should return urgently. Mention all medicines, allergies and previous abdominal diagnoses.
