Discoloured Spots on the Back: What to Know

Flat brown or grey marks can remain after a spot or follicle has settled. Raised, tender, or itchy bumps may fit acne or folliculitis, especially where sweat, friction, tight clothing, or hair products contact the skin. A ring-shaped or spreading patch, marked scale, or a new changing mole needs a different assessment. The back is difficult to inspect, so a photo taken in good light can help you compare changes over time.

Wash gently after sweating, choose loose breathable clothing, and avoid picking, scrubbing, or squeezing the area. Use non-comedogenic products when possible and protect exposed skin from sunlight, since ultraviolet exposure can deepen leftover marks. Do not apply a strong bleaching product or steroid cream without advice. A dermatologist can distinguish active bumps from post-inflammatory colour change and may discuss acne treatment, follicle care, or LED Light Therapy when appropriate.

Arrange a skin review if spots are rapidly changing, bleeding, painful without healing, repeatedly infected, or spreading despite gentle care. Seek prompt medical attention for fever, rapidly increasing redness, severe swelling, or pus with worsening pain. A persistent patch deserves an examination even when it is not uncomfortable, because colour alone cannot identify its cause.

Ask whether the marks are active pimples, folliculitis, or post-inflammatory pigmentation; whether a medicine, product, or friction could be contributing; which cleanser or treatment suits your skin; and what change should trigger a follow-up.
