Short answer

Directed attention fatigue is mental tiredness after sustained concentration, making it harder to focus, plan and ignore distractions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical trigger
Sustained concentration with too little mental recovery.
Common experience
Focusing, planning and ignoring distractions can feel unusually effortful.
Useful record
Note sleep, workload, mood, medicines and when fatigue appears.

How it can feel

You may notice that reading, organising tasks or following a conversation takes more effort after prolonged screen use, studying, driving or demanding work. Irritability, forgetfulness and a strong urge to switch tasks can accompany the mental tiredness. Rest and a change of activity may help, which differs from fatigue that persists despite adequate recovery.

Ongoing fatigue can also occur with sleep problems, stress, burnout, dehydration, infection, anaemia, kidney disease or other conditions. The symptom does not identify one cause by itself.

Ways to reduce the load

Break demanding work into shorter periods, alternate concentration with movement or a quiet pause, and reduce unnecessary notifications. Protect regular sleep, eat and drink consistently, and avoid driving when attention feels unreliable. Keep a brief record of sleep, workload, mood, medicines and symptoms; this can help a clinician see whether the pattern follows exertion or continues across ordinary days.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical review if fatigue lasts, keeps returning, limits work or self-care, or comes with weight change, breathlessness, palpitations, persistent low mood, fever or disturbed sleep. Seek urgent help for sudden confusion, fainting, new weakness on one side, severe headache, chest pain or thoughts of harming yourself.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your pattern suggests cognitive overload or another cause, whether medicines or sleep need review, and which examinations or blood tests could clarify persistent fatigue.

Questions people ask

Is directed attention fatigue the same as chronic fatigue syndrome?

No. Directed attention fatigue describes a concentration-related experience, while chronic fatigue syndrome is a specific medical condition requiring clinical assessment.

Can rest help?

A quiet break, sleep and switching to a less demanding activity may help, but persistent or worsening fatigue deserves review.
