What should you know about Dioralyte and a stomach bug?

Gastroenteritis can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, fever and loss of appetite. Losing fluid and electrolytes may lead to dehydration. An oral rehydration solution is mixed with water according to the packet directions and provides a balance of fluid and salts that the gut can absorb. Small, frequent sips may be easier to keep down than a large drink. Dioralyte is not a replacement for assessment when dehydration is developing, and it is not the same as a sugary soft drink.

Follow the product instructions carefully, including the stated amount of water, and use freshly prepared solution as directed. Offer frequent sips after loose stools or vomiting; if vomiting happens, pause briefly and restart with smaller sips. Continue breastfeeding or usual milk feeds when appropriate, and eat light foods when appetite returns. Seek urgent help for confusion, unusual sleepiness, fainting, very little or no urine, a dry mouth with worsening weakness, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or breathing difficulty. Contact a clinician promptly if a child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a significant medical condition cannot keep fluids down. Ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea can require treatment for dehydration. Fever that is severe or persistent also deserves advice.

Ask whether Dioralyte is suitable with kidney or heart problems, how much fluid is appropriate, and which warning signs should prompt same-day care. Mention all medicines and whether vomiting or diarrhoea is preventing regular treatment.
