A pink or red area can occur as treated follicles and surrounding skin react. A darker or lighter patch may develop when pigment-producing cells respond to heat or inflammation, particularly if the skin was recently tanned or already uneven in colour. A sharply outlined line or shape can also reflect the treatment area or contact with an applicator. The word mark does not identify the cause by itself; timing, texture, pain, and change over time provide useful clues.

Take a clear photograph in consistent lighting and record when the change appeared. Use only gentle cleansing and the aftercare recommended by the treating clinic. Avoid scratching, exfoliating, bleaching products, and unapproved creams while the skin is reactive. Protect the area from sunlight because exposure can deepen some pigment changes. Do not schedule another session over an unexplained mark until a qualified clinician has reviewed it and discussed whether treatment should be adjusted.

Contact the provider promptly for increasing pain, blistering, broken skin, pus, spreading redness, or marked swelling. Seek urgent help if facial swelling affects breathing or vision. Arrange a clinical review for a mark that enlarges, becomes firm, bleeds without injury, or does not start settling as expected. These features need examination rather than another laser session.
