What should you know about digital gait analysis?

Short answer
Digital gait analysis measures selected features of walking or running, helping a clinician relate movement patterns to symptoms, function, and rehabilitation goals.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Measures
- Walking or running features such as timing, symmetry, loading, and joint motion
- Best context
- Results are interpreted alongside history, examination, footwear, and activity demands
What it can show
Depending on the setup, cameras, sensors, or a pressure surface may record step timing, stride symmetry, foot loading, joint motion, and how the body moves through space. The assessment may be performed barefoot, in shoes, or during a task that reproduces your symptoms. A graph or colour map is not a diagnosis by itself. Its value comes from combining measurements with your history, physical examination, footwear, activity demands, and pain pattern.
Preparing for the assessment
Wear comfortable clothing that allows the legs and feet to be seen, and bring the shoes you commonly use for the activity being assessed. Tell the clinician about pain, previous injuries, operations, orthotics, falls, and any task you avoid. Walk naturally rather than trying to correct your technique for the camera. Afterward, the clinician can explain which findings are meaningful and whether exercises, footwear changes, or custom orthotics fit your goals.
When assessment is not enough
Seek medical assessment promptly for sudden inability to walk, rapidly worsening weakness, a new foot drop, severe pain after injury, or walking difficulty with speech or facial changes. Digital analysis should not delay evaluation of swelling, fever, suspected fracture, or new numbness. It is most useful as part of a broader assessment when symptoms persist or movement limits daily life or sport.
Questions for your doctor
What question is this analysis intended to answer? Which measures will be recorded, and how do they relate to my symptoms? Should I be tested in my usual shoes? Could the findings change my exercise plan or footwear? When should the assessment be repeated?

Questions people ask
Is digital gait analysis painful?
The recording is usually a walking or running task, but tell the clinician if a movement increases pain so it can be adapted.
Does a scan automatically prescribe orthotics?
No. Orthotics are considered only when the findings and clinical examination support a clear functional reason.
