What should you know about different surgical sutures?

Absorbable sutures gradually break down inside the body and are often used beneath the skin or where removal would be difficult. Non-absorbable sutures remain in place until a clinician removes them or may be left where lasting support is appropriate. Sutures can also differ in thickness, flexibility, and whether they are made from natural or synthetic material.

The visible thread is only part of the decision. A clinician considers the tissue being repaired, movement around the wound, cosmetic goals, contamination, and whether deeper layers need separate closure.

Follow the specific cleaning and dressing instructions given after wound suturing. Keep the area protected, avoid pulling or soaking it unless advised, and limit activity that stretches the wound. Do not cut, pull, or remove thread yourself. Attend the planned review so the wound and removal timing can be checked.

Contact a clinician promptly if redness spreads, pain increases, swelling becomes marked, pus appears, the wound opens, or fever develops. Seek urgent help for uncontrolled bleeding, loss of feeling or movement, or a deep wound involving the face, hand, joint, or a large area.
