Short answer

During diverticulitis, follow the eating plan advised by your clinician, keep fluids going, and move gradually from gentle foods back to your usual diet as pain settles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

During worse symptoms
Use the short-term plan given by your clinician; small portions may be easier to tolerate.
As you recover
Return to fibre-containing foods gradually and keep fluids going.

Worsening pain, repeated vomiting, fever, blood in stool or dehydration symptoms need assessment.

How diet may change during a flare

Diverticulitis is inflammation affecting small pouches in the bowel. Abdominal pain, tenderness, nausea or a change in bowel movements can make normal meals difficult. A clinician may suggest clear fluids for a short period if eating worsens symptoms, but this approach is not suitable for everyone and should not continue without medical advice.

When discomfort and nausea improve, many people can begin with small portions of soft, low-fibre foods such as soup, yoghurt, eggs, white rice or refined bread, depending on their clinician’s advice. This is a temporary step, not a lifelong restriction. Fibre needs vary, especially if constipation, other bowel conditions or a complicated episode is involved.

Practical eating and drinking steps

Take frequent sips of water or another suitable drink, unless you have been told to limit fluids. Choose modest meals and pause if pain, vomiting or bloating becomes worse. Once you are recovering, add fibre-containing foods slowly, such as oats, vegetables, fruit and whole grains, while continuing to drink enough. A gradual change can be easier to tolerate than suddenly eating large amounts of fibre.

Do not start laxatives, supplements or a restrictive diet to manage the episode without advice. A personalised plan may be useful if you have repeated attacks, ongoing constipation or difficulty meeting your nutritional needs. Nutrition Counselling can help tailor food choices to your symptoms and medical history.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen or hard abdomen, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. A high temperature, blood in the stool, or feeling markedly unwell also needs prompt assessment. Contact a GP if symptoms are not settling, return after improving, or you are unsure whether your eating and drinking plan is safe.

These symptoms can signal dehydration or a complication and should not be judged by diet alone. A GP Consultation can provide an examination and decide whether tests or hospital care are needed.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which foods and drinks are appropriate for your current symptoms, when to progress beyond soft foods, and how to reintroduce fibre. Also ask whether your medicines, kidney or heart condition, constipation, or previous bowel problems change the plan.

Questions people ask

Should I stop eating during diverticulitis?

Do not stop eating or drinking on your own. A clinician may recommend a short period of clear fluids for selected people, followed by a gradual return to soft foods as symptoms improve.

When can I eat fibre again after diverticulitis?

When pain and nausea are settling and your clinician agrees, reintroduce fibre-containing foods in small amounts and increase them gradually while drinking enough.

Can I manage diverticulitis with diet alone?

Diet may support comfort, but it does not replace assessment or treatment. Worsening symptoms or difficulty keeping fluids down needs prompt medical advice.
