Diastolic heart failure and ejection fraction

Ejection fraction describes the share of blood pumped out of the main pumping chamber with each contraction. A preserved result does not rule out heart failure: stiff heart muscle can limit filling, raise pressure in the heart, and contribute to breathlessness, tiredness, cough or swollen ankles. Blood pressure, heart rhythm, valve function, symptoms and an echocardiogram are considered together.

Take prescribed medicines as directed and keep a record of symptoms, blood pressure readings and any rapid change in weight or ankle swelling. Limit salt if your clinician recommends it, follow advice about fluids and stay active within your plan. Conditions such as hypertension and atrial fibrillation can affect heart function, so ask how they should be managed. A chronic disease review can help check medicines and monitoring.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, new confusion, blue lips or an inability to speak comfortably because of breathing. Arrange prompt medical review for increasing breathlessness when lying down, new palpitations, persistent cough or swelling that is getting worse.

Ask what your ejection fraction shows, whether filling pressure or stiffness is affecting your symptoms, and which findings support the diagnosis. Clarify your medicine plan, fluid and salt advice, safe activity level, follow-up timing and which changes should prompt a call.
