Diarrhea and headache

Losing fluid and salts through diarrhea can cause headache, thirst, dizziness and low energy. A viral illness such as COVID-19 or the common cold may cause headache while also upsetting the digestive system. Heat exhaustion can combine headache, weakness, nausea and diarrhea after heat or exertion. Dengue fever deserves attention after mosquito exposure, especially with fever, marked aches or a rash. Chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis can explain headache and facial pressure, but diarrhea points to another process. Anxiety can affect bowel activity and headache through tension, altered breathing or poor sleep.

Rest in a cool place and take small, regular sips of water or oral rehydration solution. Eat simple foods when able and avoid alcohol, heavy meals and strenuous activity. Note urine output, fever, travel, heat exposure, new medicines and contact with anyone who is unwell. Wash hands after using the toilet. If you take regular medicines or have kidney, heart or other chronic disease, ask a clinician which rehydration products are appropriate.

Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, fainting, confusion, stiff neck, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, repeated vomiting or inability to drink. Get urgent advice for blood or black stool, severe abdominal pain, very little urine, worsening dizziness or signs of heat illness that do not improve after cooling and fluids. Arrange medical review when diarrhea persists, recurs or follows travel, or when headache is unusual for you.
