What should you know about dexamethasone for eyes?

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that calms inflammation. Eye drops or ointment may be prescribed for selected inflammatory conditions, often for a defined period and with follow-up. Redness, pain, discharge, light sensitivity, or blurred vision can have different causes, so steroid treatment is not a suitable response to every irritated eye.

With inappropriate or prolonged use, an eye steroid can delay recognition of infection and may raise eye pressure or affect the surface of the eye. The product, strength, frequency, and duration should match the diagnosis.

Use the prescribed amount and schedule. Wash your hands, avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or skin, and close the container promptly. If you use other eye medicines, ask how long to leave between products. Do not share the bottle or use an old prescription for a new episode.

Contact the prescriber if symptoms do not improve within the advised period, return after treatment, or become harder to see. Keep follow-up appointments so eye pressure and the response to treatment can be checked when needed.

Seek urgent eye assessment for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, a painful red eye, injury, chemical exposure, new flashes or floaters, or rapidly increasing swelling. These symptoms can signal a problem needing examination rather than additional steroid drops.
