What should you know about dexamethasone for cough and cold?

Cough is a protective reflex with many possible triggers. A common cold often settles with supportive care, while asthma, acute bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, acid reflux, or another airway problem may need a different plan. A cough can be a presentation of several conditions; it does not by itself establish which condition is present.

Dexamethasone reduces inflammation and changes immune activity. That action can be useful in selected illnesses, but it may also mask worsening infection or cause effects such as mood change, stomach upset, sleep disturbance, and raised blood glucose. The dose and route depend on the diagnosis.

Do not use leftover tablets or someone else’s prescription, and do not stop a prescribed course without checking the prescriber. For a mild cold, rest, fluids, warm drinks, and suitable symptom relief may be enough. Get urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, chest pain, coughing blood, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Children with noisy breathing, marked sleepiness, poor drinking, or chest pulling in need prompt assessment. A cough lasting beyond the expected course also deserves a clinical review rather than repeated steroid use.
