Is a DEXA scan a treatment?

The scan produces measurements from selected bones, commonly the hip and spine. A clinician interprets these alongside your age, sex, medical history, medicines and fracture history. The result can help identify reduced bone density and guide a conversation about fracture prevention. It cannot repair bone, relieve pain from an injury or confirm every cause of bone loss. A referral may be considered when health history or examination suggests that measuring bone strength would help.

Keep the report and ask the requesting clinician what it means for you. Depending on the findings, the next step may include reviewing calcium and vitamin D intake, safe weight-bearing activity, fall prevention, medicines or tests for an underlying cause. Do not start or stop treatment based only on a printed score. If you are being assessed after an early loss of ovarian function, ask how that history affects bone health planning.

Seek prompt medical assessment after a fall that causes significant pain, inability to bear weight, or a suspected fracture. Contact the scan team before imaging if pregnancy is possible or you cannot lie flat. These concerns affect planning; they do not turn the scan into a treatment. Discuss persistent back pain or loss of height with a clinician because those symptoms may need assessment beyond bone-density imaging.

Ask what the scan is intended to answer, which treatment decisions it may inform, whether other tests are needed, and when your result should be reviewed. Ask how exercise or medicines fit into your personal plan.
