How long does a DEXA scan take?

The technologist checks your details, explains the procedure and helps you lie on the scanning table. The arm moves over the area being assessed, often the hip and lower spine, without enclosing your body. You need to remain still, but normal breathing is generally possible. The scan does not involve an injection or a recovery period. Time at the clinic can be longer than the actual images because registration, changing clothes and checking previous results may be included.

Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners when possible. Tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, have recently had a contrast examination, or cannot lie flat comfortably. Follow the centre's instructions about supplements and meals; preparation can vary. Bring details of medicines and any earlier bone-density reports so the clinician can compare results appropriately. Plan a little extra time if you need help with mobility or translation.

Contact the imaging centre before the appointment if pregnancy is possible, you recently received contrast, or pain makes it hard to stay still. After a DEXA scan, seek urgent care for a new severe symptom such as sudden weakness, chest pain or difficulty breathing; these are not expected effects of the scan and need separate assessment. A scan result that concerns you should be discussed with the clinician who requested it.

Ask which body areas will be scanned, how long your whole visit may take, when the report will be ready, and whether you should pause or continue any supplement. You can also ask how the result will be compared with earlier images.
