What is a DEXA scan test?

The scanner usually measures the hip and lower spine while you lie still on a table. The resulting report helps a clinician assess whether your bones may be weaker than expected and whether your fracture risk needs attention. DEXA does not directly measure pain, flexibility or the strength of muscles. It also cannot explain every fracture or symptom by itself; your age, medicines, previous fractures and other health details help put the result into context.

Tell the imaging team about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, recent contrast material, and metal or surgery near the area being scanned. Wear clothing that allows comfortable positioning and follow any local instructions. The test is generally brief, and you can normally return to routine activities afterward unless your clinician says otherwise. Ask for medical review if you have unexplained bone pain, a fracture from a small fall, repeated falls, or a noticeable change in height. Seek urgent care after severe trauma, or for sudden back pain with leg weakness, spreading numbness, or new bladder or bowel problems. A DEXA appointment should not delay assessment of a serious injury or neurological symptom.
