Is a DEXA scan safe?

A DEXA scan is generally considered safe because it uses a small amount of X-ray energy and does not involve injections or surgery. The scan is usually painless: you lie still on a scanning table while the equipment passes over areas such as the hip and spine. It does not make you radioactive, and you can normally return to your usual activities afterwards.

The test is designed to measure bone mineral density rather than treat a condition. It does not require a cut in the skin, sedation, or a recovery period. The X-ray exposure is kept low, but any exposure should still be discussed in the context of your health and previous imaging. A radiographer positions you carefully and may ask you to remain still so the images are clear. A DEXA result can help a clinician assess bone strength and decide whether further evaluation or treatment is appropriate.

Follow the instructions from the imaging centre. Wear clothing without bulky metal fasteners when possible, and tell the team about metal objects, medical devices, or recent examinations involving contrast material. You may be asked to remove jewellery or other items that could affect the image. Tell the radiographer if you could be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or have difficulty lying flat or staying still. Bring details of medicines and relevant bone or hormone conditions, such as premature ovarian insufficiency, if these have been diagnosed.

A DEXA scan itself does not usually cause symptoms that need urgent care. Contact the imaging centre or your clinician before the appointment if pregnancy is possible, you recently had a contrast-based test, or you cannot safely lie in the required position. After the scan, seek medical advice for a new or severe symptom, although this would not be an expected effect of the scan. Ask when and how you will receive the result, and arrange follow-up if the report shows reduced bone density or your clinician recommends another assessment.

You could ask why the scan has been recommended, which bones will be assessed, whether you need to change any medicines or supplements, and when the result will be reviewed. If you have had previous bone-density imaging, ask whether the new scan can be compared with it and what change would alter your care.
