When might a DEXA scan be repeated?

Bone density changes gradually, so repeating the test too soon may add little useful information. Timing depends on your earlier result, age, fracture history, medicines, health conditions, and whether a treatment has started or changed. Results are most useful when scans use comparable equipment and the report explains whether a change is larger than expected measurement variation.

Take your previous report to the appointment and tell the imaging team where the earlier scan was performed. Mention medicines or supplements that affect bone health, recent fractures, and any changes in mobility. Follow the clinic’s instructions about clothing and removable metal items. Keep treatment and exercise plans unchanged unless your clinician advises otherwise.

If Premature Ovarian Insufficiency is part of your medical history, ask how hormone changes and bone-health monitoring fit together. A repeat scan should answer a defined question, such as checking a trend or reviewing a treatment plan.

Speak with your clinician sooner if you have a new fracture after a minor injury, sudden or persistent back pain, new hip pain, noticeable loss of height, or worsening difficulty with walking. Urgent assessment is needed after a major injury, severe pain, limb deformity, or inability to stand or bear weight.
