DEXA scan reimbursement: what to check

A clinic may ask for a clinician’s referral, diagnosis, or explanation of why bone density measurement is needed. Administrative approval can also depend on whether the scan is being used to investigate a concern, assess fracture risk, or monitor a known bone-health issue. Ask the clinic for the planned test name, the referring clinician’s details, and an itemised estimate of any patient responsibility. Contact your payer before the appointment and ask whether prior authorisation, a referral, a particular facility, or a specific report is required. Record the representative’s name, the date of the call, and any reference number.
