A DEXA examination is an imaging test rather than a standard photograph of the whole skeleton. The scanner compares how X-rays pass through bone and soft tissue, often at the hip and lower spine. A radiographer handles positioning and image acquisition, while a qualified clinician reviews the measurements alongside your age, sex, medical history, and fracture history.

The report can help identify reduced bone density and support decisions about fracture prevention. It is one part of an assessment, not a complete diagnosis by itself. The result may be affected by spinal arthritis, metal hardware, or difficulty holding the required position, so mention relevant surgery or mobility problems before the appointment.

Wear comfortable clothing and avoid metal around the areas being examined when possible. Follow local instructions about supplements or recent contrast imaging. During the scan, you may lie on your back while the scanner arm moves above you. Staying still helps the system collect usable measurements. The appointment is generally simple, but tell the radiographer if pain makes a position difficult or if pregnancy is possible.

Call the imaging centre before attending if you may be pregnant, have recently received contrast, or cannot lie in the required position. Ask for help promptly if you develop severe pain, faintness, or breathing difficulty during or after the appointment; these are not expected features of routine DEXA positioning and deserve assessment. For report concerns, arrange a review with the clinician who requested the scan.

Ask which skeletal sites will be assessed, who will interpret the images, and whether arthritis or spinal hardware could influence the reading. Clarify when you will receive the report and which findings would change your treatment or follow-up.
