What should you know about a DEXA scan during pregnancy?

DEXA scanning uses a low amount of radiation to measure bone mineral density. Even when the scanned area is away from the abdomen, pregnancy information matters when deciding whether the test is needed now. The requesting clinician can weigh the purpose of the scan against postponing it or choosing another approach.

If the scan was ordered before you knew you were pregnant, do not panic. Contact the requesting clinician and imaging centre promptly, explain when the scan occurred or is planned, and follow their advice. They can document the exposure and arrange appropriate pregnancy care.

Tell the referrer and imaging team if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or there is any chance of pregnancy. Do this before arriving so the appointment can be reviewed. Do not cancel other antenatal care while waiting for a response. If the scan is postponed, ask how bone health will be assessed later and whether any symptoms need attention meanwhile.
