What should you know about DEXA scan numbers?

A T-score compares bone density with a healthy young-adult reference. A Z-score compares it with an age- and sex-matched reference. The report may list separate values for the lumbar spine, total hip and femoral neck. The lowest relevant measurement can influence the clinical discussion, but a clinician also considers fractures, medicines and conditions affecting bone.

Write down the score, body site and date, then review the report with the clinician who requested it. Avoid judging the result from one number alone or comparing it with another person's report. Ask about weight-bearing activity, nutrition, fall prevention and whether medicines or hormone changes need attention.

Book follow-up if a score is flagged, the report recommends clinical correlation, or you have had a fracture from a minor fall. Seek urgent care for severe pain after trauma, inability to bear weight, sudden weakness, or new bladder or bowel symptoms.

Ask which score is relevant to your age and circumstances, which site produced the lowest value, and whether the result indicates monitoring or treatment. Ask how a future scan will be compared and what changes would prompt earlier review.
