What should you know about the DEXA scan method?

The scanner commonly assesses the hip and lower spine. A computer compares the bone measurement with reference data and produces a report for your clinician. The result supports assessment of low bone density, but it is interpreted alongside your age, medical history, medicines and previous fractures.

Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners if the imaging centre recommends it. Tell the team about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, recent contrast imaging, and any difficulty lying flat or remaining still. Follow the centre's instructions about calcium supplements before the appointment.

Contact the clinician who requested the scan if you have a new fracture, severe back or hip pain, or a sudden loss of height. These symptoms may need assessment before the scan result is discussed. Seek urgent care after a serious injury, especially if you cannot stand, walk or move a limb normally.

Ask which bones will be measured, whether your medicines affect bone health, and when the report should be reviewed. You can also ask what follow-up plan fits your result and personal fracture risks.
