What a DEXA scan is used for

DEXA, also called bone-density scanning, uses low-dose X-rays to estimate how much mineral is present in selected bones. The hip and lower spine are common measurement sites. A clinician may request it when there is concern about fragile bones, a fracture after a minor injury, loss of bone linked to hormonal change, or a medicine or condition that affects bone. Premature ovarian insufficiency is one health issue worth mentioning when discussing bone assessment.

The scan supports a risk assessment; it does not show every reason for bone pain and does not replace an examination. It is also different from an X-ray used to look for an acute fracture. Your result is interpreted with your history, falls risk, family history, medicines, and previous imaging.

Follow the centre's instructions and tell staff if you could be pregnant, recently had a contrast examination, or use metal-containing supplements or medicines. Wear clothing without bulky metal fasteners when advised. Bring a list of medicines and any previous DEXA reports. During the appointment you usually lie still while the scanner passes over the selected areas. The process is non-invasive, and you can normally return to usual activities afterwards unless your care team says otherwise.

Contact your healthcare team if you have questions about why the test was requested, especially after a new fracture or while taking long-term steroid medicine. Seek urgent assessment for sudden severe back or hip pain, a visible deformity, or inability to stand or walk after an injury. These symptoms need clinical examination rather than waiting for a routine scan discussion.

Ask what the scan is intended to answer, which sites will be measured, whether you need to change any medicines before it, and how the result could alter your care. Ask when and how the report will be explained.
