You lie on a scanning table while a low-dose X-ray arm passes over the selected region. Remaining still helps the software distinguish bone mineral from surrounding tissue. A report can support assessment of bone health or body composition, but it is not a general health screen. Metal, positioning, previous surgery and the chosen reference data may affect interpretation, so the report should be discussed in context.

Read the service instructions before attending. Tell the team if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, have implants, recently received contrast, or may struggle to lie flat. Wear comfortable clothing without metal and bring details of medicines and previous fractures. Confirm who will explain the result and what to do if the report is delayed or you move between healthcare services.

Arrange clinical advice for repeated falls, loss of height, a fracture after a small injury, or persistent bone pain. Seek urgent care for severe pain after trauma, inability to stand, collapse, chest pain or significant breathing difficulty. A scheduled scan cannot assess sudden deterioration, so urgent symptoms need timely medical attention.

Ask what HSE refers to in your appointment, which site will be scanned, whether calcium or other preparation matters, and when your result will be reviewed. Ask whether conditions such as Premature Ovarian Insufficiency or medicines affecting bone are relevant to your plan.
