What should you know about a full-body DEXA scan?

You lie still while the scanner passes over you. The software separates tissues according to how they absorb the X-ray beam, producing measurements for the whole measured body and selected regions. These figures can help a clinician assess body composition or monitor a planned intervention. They are estimates with technical limits, so a small change between scans may not represent a meaningful biological change. Comparisons are more useful when the same centre and protocol are used.

Follow the centre’s instructions about food, supplements and recent imaging. Tell the team if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, have metal implants, or have difficulty lying flat. Choose comfortable clothing without metal fasteners. During the scan, remain still and follow breathing or positioning instructions. Afterward, ask when and how the report will be explained; do not interpret an isolated composition value as a diagnosis.

Contact a clinician promptly if the concern behind the scan includes unexplained weight loss, repeated falls, severe bone pain, or unusual weakness. Seek urgent care for a new inability to move a limb, severe pain after an injury, fainting, chest pain or serious breathing difficulty. A full-body DEXA scan is not an emergency test and should not postpone treatment for sudden symptoms.

Ask which body regions will be included, whether bone density is part of the request, what decision the report may inform, and how results will be compared over time. Clarify whether your medicines or hormonal health, including Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, should be discussed.
