What should you know about DEXA scans for muscle mass?

Short answer

A DEXA scan estimates lean soft tissue, which can help track muscle-related changes, but it does not measure strength or muscle function directly.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What “lean mass” means

DEXA separates X-ray measurements into bone mineral, fat, and lean soft tissue estimates. Lean mass includes muscle but also water and other non-fat tissues, so the number should not be read as pure contractile muscle.

Regional results may show differences between limbs or the trunk. Hydration, recent exercise, food, positioning, and software can affect a comparison. Grip strength, walking ability, resistance performance, diet, and medical history add information that the scan cannot provide.

Using the result well

Follow the centre's preparation instructions and tell staff about possible pregnancy, recent contrast imaging, or difficulty remaining still. For monitoring, use consistent timing, preparation, and equipment when possible.

Discuss unexpected low lean-tissue estimates with a clinician, especially if you have weakness, falls, reduced appetite, unintentional weight loss, or a long period of inactivity. A plan may include resistance exercise, adequate protein and energy, physiotherapy, or assessment for an underlying illness.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice for progressive weakness, repeated falls, trouble climbing stairs, difficulty rising from a chair, or loss of independence. These signs call for functional assessment rather than relying on a scan alone.

Seek urgent help for sudden weakness on one side, new trouble speaking, severe breathlessness, or a fall causing severe pain or inability to bear weight.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the scan is needed, which lean-tissue regions will be reported, and how the result will be combined with strength and function testing. Ask what change would prompt follow-up or a different investigation.

General Clinics & Polyclinics in Abu Dhabi

That answer is general. If you want it applied to your own case, these are licensed general clinics & polyclinics listed in Abu Dhabi.

Ordered by verification status and how complete each clinic's public record is, then alphabetically. This is a directory listing, not a ranking — Zavis does not rate or recommend providers.

A factual listing drawn from the DHA, DOH and MOHAP licence registers. It is not a referral, an endorsement, or advice that any of these providers is right for you.

Questions people ask

Does a higher lean-mass result prove that muscles are stronger?

No. Strength depends on neuromuscular function, training, pain, and health; it needs separate assessment.

Can DEXA diagnose muscle disease?

No. It may prompt discussion, but diagnosis requires symptoms, examination, and targeted tests when needed.
