What should you know about DEXA scan duration?

The scan requires you to lie in position while the scanner measures selected bones, commonly the hip and lower spine. The imaging itself may be completed quickly, but the visit also includes confirming your details, reviewing relevant health information, helping you onto the table, and checking that the images are usable.

Timing can be longer when several regions are assessed, movement makes a repeat image necessary, or you need extra help with positioning. The written report is prepared separately, so you may not receive a full interpretation before leaving the department.

Allow time for check-in and avoid scheduling an important commitment immediately afterwards if delays would cause stress. Wear comfortable clothing and tell staff in advance about pain, stiffness, or difficulty lying flat. Remain as still as you can during the measurement; movement can lead to additional images and extend the appointment.

Call ahead if you need mobility assistance, an interpreter, or a modified appointment arrangement. During scanning, tell the radiographer if a position causes pain or you feel faint. Seek urgent medical care for symptoms such as sudden chest pain or severe breathing difficulty; these are not expected effects of scan duration.

Ask how long your centre expects the visit to take, whether more than one area is planned, when the report will be released, and who will discuss the findings with you.
