What should you know about DEXA scan dose?

The scanner sends two low-energy X-ray beams through selected bones, often at the hip and lower spine. A detector compares the beams after they pass through your body and uses the difference to estimate bone mineral density. The exposure is brief and targeted, and the scan does not leave radiation in your body.

Radiation decisions still need personal context. A pregnancy possibility, repeated imaging, or a medical condition affecting positioning should be discussed with the imaging team. The expected benefit of answering a bone-health question is considered alongside the small exposure.

Tell the department if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, and mention recent X-ray, CT, or other imaging appointments. Follow the centre’s clothing and preparation advice. Do not cancel a clinically useful scan solely because you are worried about the word radiation; ask what the test is intended to answer and whether the timing is appropriate for you.

Seek advice before the scan if pregnancy is possible or if you have had many recent imaging tests and want the team to review the timing. A DEXA scan itself does not normally cause symptoms. Seek urgent care for new severe pain, breathing difficulty, fainting, or another acute symptom rather than attributing it to the radiation exposure.
