What should you know about a DEXA scan department?

The department usually confirms your appointment, asks about pregnancy possibility and recent imaging, and explains how to position yourself. During the scan, you remain awake and lie still while a scanner assesses selected areas such as the hip and lower spine. The radiographer operates the equipment and can answer practical questions, while a clinician interprets the results.

The department may be located within radiology, diagnostic imaging, or a dedicated bone-health service. Its role is to collect consistent measurements; it does not by itself establish the cause of low bone density or decide which treatment is right for you.

Bring your referral or appointment details and a list of medicines and supplements if requested. Choose clothing that allows comfortable positioning and has little or no metal. Tell staff about difficulty lying flat, limited movement, recent fractures, or recent imaging so they can plan safely. Keep taking prescribed medicines unless your clinician or the department gives different instructions.

Call the department before attending if you may be pregnant, cannot transfer onto the scanning table, or have had recent tests that could affect the measurement. During the appointment, report pain, dizziness, or difficulty remaining still. Seek urgent care for severe symptoms such as sudden weakness, chest pain, or trouble breathing rather than waiting for a scan report.

Ask whether the service needs prior reports, which regions will be scanned, who will explain the result, and how the findings will fit with your fracture history, medicines, and other health conditions.
