What should you know about DEXA scan AP spine?

AP means anteroposterior: the X-ray beam passes from the front toward the back. During this part of a DEXA study, the scanner records the lumbar vertebrae while you lie still on the examination table. The result estimates bone mineral density in the measured vertebrae and may be reported with a T-score or Z-score.

The lumbar spine can be useful for assessing bone, but arthritis, spinal curvature, compression changes, surgical hardware, or other dense material can affect the reading. A clinician may therefore compare it with a hip measurement and examine the image and report rather than relying on one number. The AP spine label describes the imaging view, not a separate disease.

Wear clothing without bulky metal and tell the imaging team about recent contrast examinations, pregnancy, spinal surgery, or metal in the body. Follow the centre's preparation instructions and remain still when asked. Afterward, keep the written report and ask the requesting clinician to explain the measured vertebrae, the comparison with any previous scan, and whether the hip result changes the interpretation. Discuss medicines, fractures, falls, menopause, and conditions that may influence bone strength.

Get prompt medical help after a fall or sudden movement if you develop severe back pain, weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or difficulty standing. Arrange a clinical review for persistent back pain, a noticeable change in height or posture, or pain after a minor injury. These symptoms need assessment on their own; an AP spine result cannot explain every cause of back pain.
