What should you know about DEXA scan 3 sites?

Short answer

A three-site DEXA scan measures bone density at selected areas so a clinician can compare results and assess bone strength.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the three sites mean

The scan commonly examines the lower spine, a hip, and the forearm or another clinically useful site. The exact locations depend on the referral and the scanner protocol. Each area can reflect bone health differently, so comparing them gives more context than relying on one measurement. The report may include a bone mineral density value and a comparison score; your clinician interprets these alongside age, sex, medical history, medicines, and fracture history.

How to prepare

Wear clothing without metal fasteners when possible and tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, recently had a test using contrast material, or cannot lie flat. Follow the centre’s instructions about calcium supplements before the appointment. During the scan, remain still while the arm passes over the body; the examination is usually brief and does not require a needle. Bring details of previous bone scans so results can be compared using the same sites and method.

When to seek care

A DEXA scan itself is not an emergency test. Contact your clinician promptly after a new fracture, sudden severe back pain, loss of height, or difficulty standing after a minor injury. These symptoms can need assessment before the scan appointment. Seek urgent help for severe pain after a fall, weakness or numbness in both legs, or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Questions to ask

Ask which three sites will be measured, what the report’s scores mean for you, whether a previous scan can be compared, and when follow-up testing or treatment should be discussed.

Questions people ask

Does a three-site scan hurt?

No. You lie still while the scanner measures selected areas; there is no injection.

Why measure more than one site?

Different bones can show different patterns, so several measurements give the clinician broader context.
